October 4 - December 5, 2009
Louise Ogemahgeshig Fischer is a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. Louise works with a variety of artistic media, and her passion for art is apparent in her oil and acrylic paintings, clay sculpture, and other traditional Indian art and craft products.
Louise began exhibiting her paintings at the age of 14 and received an art degree from the Mohave Desert College in Kingman, Arizona. Shortly after graduation, Louise was presented with several awards by the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe for her artistic and academic achievements. She is the recipient of the 1989 National Animal Spirit Award from the Native American Cultural Institute and has exhibited her work at venues across the western United States, including the University of Minnesota and the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, Montana.
Nature and the presence of light are inspirations to Louise, and she uses traditional materials to create art pieces that vary in subject matter and composition. Louise has a studio at her home near Helena, Montana where she creates the majority of her artwork. She currently serves as a speaker for the Montana Committee for the Humanities and speaks to adults and children on a variety of Native American related topics such as Indian customs, history, and art. Louise also teaches classes on clay sculpture and traditional Indian art to a variety of age groups.
Many of the pieces shown may be purchased through the Pikuni Gift Shop located at the Museum of the Plains Indian. The gift shop can be reached at (406) 338-7957 or (406) 338-7954. After the exhibit closes, please contact Louise Fischer at (406) 475-3259.
