Sioux Indian Museum, Rapid City, South Dakota

Landscapes and More

by Floyd Nez

Exhibition March 11 – May 3, 2012

Landscapes and MoreFloyd Nez (Sicangu Lakota/Diné), an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has been experimenting with art since childhood. In the beginning Floyd watched relatives or community members creating beadwork and jewelry. In later years he began taking classes and attending workshops to learn the technical skills needed to begin a serious venture into the world of fine contemporary art. Floyd attended Sinte Gleska University in Mission, South Dakota, from 1997 to 2002 majoring in fine arts. He took a position as an art instructor at the Great Plains Art Institute at Sinte Gleska University from 2002 to 2009 and taught various forms of fine art. To supplement his career in the arts, Floyd worked as an archeological field assistant for the Sicangu Heritage Center, Mission, South Dakota, mapping early reservation sites, gathering plant information, and interviewing elders. Currently, Floyd teaches drawing at Oglala Lakota College in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Floyd prefers making his own frames and stretching his canvas rather than being inhibited by pre-fabricated supplies. His primary media are oil, acrylic, and the various materials he can obtain on the reservation. Today, Floyd’s work consists mostly of landscapes that visually transport the audience to the Northern Plains. As a departure from landscapes, however, Floyd has been contemplating returning to more linear forms in his art.

In 2007 Floyd entered the annual Red Cloud Art Show, Pine Ridge, South Dakota, and won an award for a batik painting. In 2009 he was the promotional artist for the event. In 2007 he won two awards for an oil painting and a monoprint at the Northern Plains Indian Art Market, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Most recently, Floyd’s work was selected to be part of a traveling group show entitled “Making New Traditions” which was organized by The Heritage Center, Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

During the exhibit, prices of artwork for sale can be obtained by contacting The Journey Museum Store at (605) 394-2201. After the exhibit closes, please contact Floyd Nez by mail at PO Box 836, Mission, South Dakota 57555; by phone at (605) 407-1493; or by email at sol752003@yahoo.com.

QUOTE:
“I want the viewer to not feel disconnected from what they are looking at and remember this collected idea is thousands of years old. Being human is what inspired me to create everything I do. I am dedicated to the expression of my indigenous culture.”
